Running Adobe Suite for Windows on my Mac

20 Dec

So this post is only a little bit about film-making. It’s more about computers and operating systems. Feel free to tune out now if you’re not interested in that sort of thing.

The Problem

So – I have a (fully legal) copy of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master collection for Windows, which is fairly old (the box says copyright 2008). But it does HD videos, and – well, it’s what I’ve got. And I don’t want to pay $360pa for a newer version when I already own a version that does everything I need.

The other thing I have is a Mac mini. Apparently it’s a Late 2012 model. (Back when I bought CS4, I only had a Windows box.)

It's a Late 2012 model running Yosemite 10.10.1

It’s a Late 2012 model running Yosemite 10.10.1

So my challenge is to get CS4 for Windows working on my Mac.

Enter Bootcamp

So the Mac is perfectly capable of booting into Windows via Boot Camp. (I could also run Windows in something like VirtualBox inside MacOS X, but I’d rather do dual-boot.)

Apparently Boot Camp 5.1 can run Windows 7 (though nothing earlier). And Windows 7 can run CS4. Including Windows 7 64 bit version. And my Late 12 Mac Mini can run Boot Camp 5 (or even Boot Camp 4, if I need 32 bit Windows 7.) So all I need is to get those things installed.

Boot Camp is free, and CS4 is already paid for. Now I just need to get a copy of Windows 7 – legally, if at all possible. It’s easy enough to download an official ISO of Windows 7 from Microsoft, but that’s not much use without a valid Product Key. So where do I buy one of those?

You can’t buy just the key, and you can’t buy the box anymore either, if you’re looking on Microsoft’s store. You can buy the box elsewhere, but it looks like I’ll have to pay $125 – $175 for it … or maybe just $55

Things I’ve learned the hard way – #2

13 Mar

Always, always play back the sound after the first take or two – and listen to it. That way, you’ll know if it’s got a loud hum in the background.  😦

Always do storyboards. That way when you cut to an incoming SMS on the phone, you’ll know whether it needs to be sitting on the table, or in the actor’s hand.  😦
